Educating and inspiring future leaders intellectually and creatively is at the core of the BMP's work.
The BMP runs 3 computer labs that are open daily throughout the year, we have a library, we offer homework help for students during the school year, and offer one-on-one tutoring for those students needing extra attention. In addition to this, BMP holds 2 annual summer camps providing hands-on-learning opportunities that make learning fun.
Supporting the work of our schools
The BMP works in 5 rural villages located towards the peak of Jamaica's Blue Mountains. In our service area there are two Jamaican Primary Schools and five Basic Schools (equivalent of preschool in the United States). The focus of much of our work in education is supporting those schools, the teachers, and the principles.
In 2014 our communities became connected to the world in a whole new way in thanks to our partners at Digital Bridge that built computer labs and provided the BMP with dozens of laptop computers. The BMP now runs three computer labs with high-speed internet: one lab in the BMP Community Center and two labs at Minto and Penlyne schools.
BMP Ambassadors run programming in the school-based labs designing and teaching computer lessons that are coordinated with the curriculum in the classroom.
Summa Exploraz Program
Our annual Summa Exploraz (Patois for Summer Explorers) is an exploration of culture using folktales, music, dance, language, geography and games during 2 seperate week-long camps hosted in Minto and Penlyne Castle. In 2015 we focused on the countries of Jamaica, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica and Cuba with the goal of achieving introductory proficiency in conversational Spanish. We had an amazing two weeks with an incredible team of volunteers from Jamaica, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Lebanon and the United States. One World, One Love, One Human Family! Get in touch if you are interested in volunteering with Summa Exploraz in 2016.
