Educating and Empowering

Blue Mountain Project welcomes Carole and Ron Sand to Hagley Gap. Carole and Ron are Peace Corps Volunteers who will spend the next two years helping the communities in Hagley Gap District. Carole has a MA in Elementary Education. Carole will work in the schools, first with the basic schools (ages 3-6) and then in the middle schools (Minto and Penlyne Primary schools). She will also start an Adult Literacy Program in Hagley Gap.

Ron, who has construction and business management experience, will do follow-ups and maintain the bio-sand filtration which was recently installed at the Hagley Gap Basic School by the Bluelab Engineering team from the University of Michigan. He will also assist the community with the greenhouse that is near the Hagley Clinic and supervise groups that come down to do construction projects.

As a former Peace Corps Volunteer (Zaire 80-84), I know that Carole and Ron will soon become integral parts of the Gap community, giving their time, experience and energy to help the community develop and having fun learning Jamaica culture, food, and patois.
