Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
Our Service Learning Program provides volunteers the opportunity to live, work and experience life in a rural Jamaican village. The majority of our volunteers work in our health and education programs on projects that include classroom teaching, health education, preventative healthcare, one-on-one tutoring or volunteering in our computer labs. However, based upon the skill sets and interests of volunteers we will work together to determine the specific project for you or your team.
At the core of our volunteer-ship is the goal of increasing our volunteers’ global awareness through cultural exchange. The Blue Mountain Project's aim is to provide volunteers an educational experience where they gain as much as they share. For example, nearly all residents of our communities are directly involved in the growing, roasting, processing or packaging of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee-an international commodity sold in coffee houses and shops around the globe. However, you will learn how our international system of agriculture perpetuates the cycle of poverty for the majority of coffee farmers in Jamaica. After volunteering with the BMP perhaps you will consider using your purchasing power to seek out agricultural products that pay farmers a living wage? Our hope is that you come as you are and that you leave inspired. Together as an international community of informed global citizens we can work toward a better, sustainable and more equitable world.
Volunteers pay an all inclusive program fee of $99 US dollars per day that covers volunteer lodging, meals, in-country transportation, local educational programming, and the excursion to the peak of the Blue Mountains. The service learning program fees go directly into the communities where we work; our volunteers stay with local host families where they also get their meals, local community members lead our excursions, teach the classes, and community members provide transportation. BMP service learning volunteers are one of the largest contributors to the local economy.
Our team works to make the service learning program unique, educational and an experience you will treasure for a life-time.
The Blue Mountain Project works to design itineraries for your trip that meets the needs of individual volunteers and volunteer groups. This includes giving volunteers numerous options to explore and enjoy the best of the real Jamaica. The service learning program includes educational opportunities and an and incursion included your program fees and has numerous exciting day and overnight trips that can be added to your itinerary.
