The BMP is looking for volunteers to join us this summer to engage students and stimulate young minds.
The BMP partners with rural farming villages in Jamaica's Blue Mountains to improve health, education and the economy. While we work in arguably one of the most beautiful locations in the world, it is a rural, isolated region in the poorest parish of Jamaica and there is currently insufficient programming to keep children and young adults stimulated during the long summer months. The BMP has 3 computer labs that are open daily throughout the year, we have a library, we run a week-long summer camp and our Education Ambassador Joe Donovan will be coordinating new summer programs in 2015; however, with your help as a summer volunteer there is so much more we can do.
We are ideally looking for teams of 4 to 12 volunteers to travel to Jamaica this summer for 5 to 10 days to coordinate innovative day-long or week-long activities to engage our youth. Organize a group of friends, members of your school or university, your service-club or your church, and join us in making a difference! While teams of volunteers are ideal, we are happy to work with individual volunteers or smaller groups wanting to work with the BMP this summer.
We will build off of the skills sets and interests of our volunteers in determining specific programming, but ideas that excite us include starting a singing group or band, cooking classes, swimming lessons, a day of planting fruit trees, hiking, sports, arts and crafts, video making, photography or even things as simple as reading time and board games.
One example of a week-long activity we love is a summer play! Your team works with children and young adults in selecting a play, building a small set, designing costumes, helping the actors learn their lines, and at the end of the week the show is presented to the community.
We would love to hear your ideas for summer programming and our Service Learning Coordinator Haley is excited to set up an amazing volunteer experience for you and your group.
